This chapter discusses scholarly work in the field of ethnomathematics from three perspectives that seem to encompass much of the current work in the field: challenging Eurocentrism in mathematics; ethnomathematics praxis in the curriculum; and ethnomathematics as a field of research. Ethnomathematics, as a field of inquiry, began in about 1970, although the term itself did not come into use until about 10 years later. Its basic tenet is that mathematical ideas are cultural expressions embedded within cultural contexts. The emergence or elaboration of mathematical ideas follows no necessary or universal path. Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematical ideas and practices situated in their cultural context. Culturally Situated Design Tools (CSDTs) are web‐based software applications that allow students to create simulations of cultural arts—Native American beadwork, African American cornrow hairstyles, urban graffiti, and so forth—using these underlying mathematical principles.
